Admitted to the Union in the year 1788, Maryland is the 7th state of the United States. It is home to roughly 6,177,224 people, and ranks as the 42th largest state, occupying an area of 32,131 km². Unlike other states in its larger area, which have one to two climate types, Maryland has several zones of varying climate types, which is owed to multiple factors - closeness to water, differences in elevation, and the influence of downslope winds. The state's eastern half has a humid subtropical climate, having humid and hot summers, with mildly cool winters. Then comes the Piedmont area, which begins to experience a humid continental climate, facing higher levels of precipitation and temperatures going as low as 10 °F (−12 °C). Higher elevated regions within western Maryland also face a similar type of climate, but have a higher level of precipitation and winter temperatures that typically go below 10 °F.
Metal, asphalt shingles and clay tiles are a mainstay in Maryland, whereas materials are concerned. These materials are used in different types of designs, the most common of them being modern flat roofs (usually found on commercial facilities, but now increasingly being adopted in residential properties), curved roofs (which uses metal to create a bend, thus adding more space and aesthetic appeal), sculptured roofs (which allows homeowners to have the benefits of security while being able to add their personal touch), gambrel roofs (a Dutch design where the roof slopes in two places), and dormer roof (where the window is extended away from the home and has a roof of its own).
