Known as the Sooner State, Oklahoma was admitted into the U.S. as the 46th state November 16, 1907. The state's name derives from two words out of Choctaw American Indian Tribe vocabulary: okla homma, meaning "red people." Oklahoma is most well known for herds of endangered American Bison and large tracts of prairie grasslands.

Oklahoma gets its nickname Sooner State from land runs that were held in the late 1800s, where settlers broke land grabbing rules. In the 1930s, the state was hit by a major dust bowl, devastating crops and families alike, sending many families on the road to California. The 1930's dust bowl incident inspired the novel The Grapes of Wrath by author John Steinbeck. Later, the novel was turned into a film by John Ford.

Oklahoma has been the subject of other artistic works and representations. Composer Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II first musical was Oklahoma!, based on the play Green Grow the Lilacs. In 1925, the Baltimore Evening Sun quoted H.L. Mencken saying "There is almost, indeed, an Oklahoma literature, or, at all events, an Oklahoma manner."

This "Oklahoma manner" continues to inspire artists today. The Tulsa Ballet out of Tulsa, OK is rated as one of the U.S. top ballet companies by the New York Times. The University of Oklahoma's dance program became the country's first accredited ballet program in the 1960s., and Oklahoma City hosts a Festival of the Arts, which also ranks within the top art festivals with the U.S.
