Houston County is located in the center of Georgia and is named after the state's 17th governor, John Houstoun. The county's name was originally spelled Houstoun, as the governor spelled his name this way during his lifetime, but has since been using the current spelling of Houston. The county was formed in May of 1821 after a treaty with the Creek Indians made it the 51st county in the state. It was once one of the largest counties in Georgia before being reduced in size due to the formation of Bibb, Crawford, Pike, Macon, and Peach counties. The city of Perry serves as the county seat with the county being a part of the Warner Robins Metropolitan area.
The most well known attraction in Houston County is the annual Georgia National Fair which takes place in the county seat of Perry. Major companies such as Frito-Lay, Heileman Brewing Co., and CEMEX Inc. have operated in Houston County. The area's largest employer is Robins Air Force Base in nearby Warner Robins, Georgia which provides employment for some 21,000 individuals. The base began as an Army Air Corps repair depot and is now home to the U.S. Air Force's 78th Air Base Wing and the Material Command's Warner Robins Air Logistics Center. The base provides service and support to many of the Air Force's aircraft, engines, and missiles as well as software and avionics systems.
