Admitted to the Union in the year 1845, Florida is the 27th state of the United States. It is home to roughly 21,538,187 people, and ranks as the 22nd largest state, occupying an area of 170,312 km². It is one of 5 ‘Gulf States,’ with a coastline spanning 2,170 km. Most of the state enjoys a tropical climate, while the central and northern parts face a humid subtropical climate. Unlike other states, Florida has a dedicated period in the year (i.e., the time between May and October) which is “rainy season.” Unsurprisingly, Florida sees high storm activity throughout the year, and has been the first point of contact for several hurricanes, cyclones and tropical storms. Snowfall is extremely rare here - and the times when it does occur is largely concentrated in the northernmost areas of the state.
As Florida often faces weather extremes, namely heat waves, storms, tropical cyclones and hurricanes, roofing systems here need to be built keeping resilience to such weather elements. For this reason, materials such as tile and metal are highly preferred - while the former can resist winds of up to 120 mph, the latter can resist winds of up to 160 mph and can even withstand hurricanes of up to Category 4 in strength. Tiles, however, offer an added advantage of the owner being able to replace just damaged tiles (in case there are any) rather than replacing the entire roof. Great emphasis is also given to roof shapes and slopes - these two factors, in conjunction with the material, can greatly determine how sturdy (or not) a roof can be. Many roofing professionals have advised homeowners to use octagonal or hexagonal-shaped roofs as they provide better wind resistance. Similarly, roofs with multiple slopes (like hip roofs) are given more importance, as they can break wind speeds more efficiently.
