Admitted to the Union in the year 1889, North Dakota is the 39th state of the United States. It is home to roughly 774,948 people, and ranks as the 19th largest state, occupying an area of 183,123 km2. In theory, North Dakota faces a continental climate in its east (having warm-to-hot summers and cold, albeit not freezing winters), and a semi-arid climate in its west (with low levels of precipitation). However, its strategic location in the country's Upper Midwest region means that almost the entire state faces both seasonal and daily variations in temperature. This is because its location makes it the meeting points of multiple atmospheric air masses, including the polar, the Northern Pacific, and those from the Rocky Mountains and the southern Pacific Ocean.
Seeing as North Dakota is a state that faces unpredictable weather and temperature variations, rooftops in this state have to be equally strong and flexible - so much so that they could handle heavy rain on one day and strong sunlight on the next. Shingle roofs are a go to - since they offer this combination along with less maintenance and low cost. However, homeowners with more money, time and a want for aesthetic appeal on their hands go for more advanced options, such as wooden shakes, clay tiles, solar roofing, and reservoir roofing systems. Also popular here are close cell foam roofs, which is essentially a spray polyurethane foam (SPF) system that includes insulation with low-to-no-slope roofs as well as interior walls in both homes and commercial structures.
