Richmond is the capital city of Virginia. Prior to being settled by white colonists from England, the area that is now Richmond, VA was inhabited by the Powhatan Native American tribe. Richmond's founding date is listed as 1607, but the area wasn't officially named Richmond until 1737.

During the American Civil War, Richmond served as capital of the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865. Several Civil War battles were fought there. When the city was captured on April 3, 1865, it was a sign that the Confederacy would soon surrender.
