About the License Process for New Jersey Roofing Contractors

The east coast state of New Jersey first requires anybody who works on a home construction to be registered with the state prior to commencing any work. Home repair contractors have a specific New Jersey registration requirement along with other professions that work on the same kind of structures.

As defined, anybody who provides work for pay in terms of improving, performing, or selling goods on a work project for a home repair must have a home repair contractor's license. That said, the licensing aspect only applies where the roofer is willing to finance a customer's project for the payment approach. However, this approach does not preclude a roofer's obligation to have insurance in place. A New Jersey roofer must still have a workers compensation policy as well as public liability coverage in place before starting work.

All applicants must pay a fee of $300 to obtain their home repair contractor's license as part of the license processing. Once requirements and the license fee payment are met, the approved license stays in place active for two years from the date of issuance.

Alternatively, a roofer could get a home improvement contractor's license instead. The scope of work allowed under this type of roofing license is far more limited, but the cost to the contractor is less as well. The roofer under this regulation can make changes to existing residential homes but cannot do work that creates new residential structures. Registration requires a fee payment of $90 with the registration application and the duration lasts for one year from the date of issuance.

Going about Preparing Your Roof for the Rainy Season in New Jersey

Most of the time, we as homeowners, just expect our homes to be able to withstand the onslaught of the seasons: hot temperatures, snowy conditions, monsoon like rain, our house and roof are just supposed to be able to protect us from it all. Naturally, in order to do its job, your home has to be ready and that’s why preparing your roof for the rainy season in New Jersey is so important. Like many regions of the U.S., New Jersey tends to see the most concentrated amounts of rain in the spring time. Therefore it makes the most sense to have professionals come to your home in the late summer or fall months to ensure that things on the roof are ready to go and rain damage is of little concern. There are plenty of contractors out there with the equipment and expertise to make sure your roof is in great condition.

Roof Maintenance in New Jersey is an Essential Task

Every year you will want to have a roofing contractor come and do an inspection of your roof. One of the first things your contractor will do while preparing your roof for the rainy season is to check that your roof and gutters are clear of debris. He or she is likely to recommend that you take a look every so often to ensure that the gutters and roof remain free of debris throughout the season. If you have trees near the roof, it might be a good idea to have them removed or trimmed back. Winds and rain can easily land branches and leaves on your roof and create a leak hazard. The last thing you will want to deal with in the rainy months is a leaky roof over your head.

When examining your roof, a New Jersey roofing professional will be looking for any future problem signs. A good roof will be pretty much impervious to the elements, but even a small flaw can allow water to leak into your home and result in costly damages. If the professional finds any damage in your roof, it is more cost effective to have the repairs made before the rainy season begins. Failing to do so could result in massive repairs extending far past the roof.
