In what was originally the western quadrant of the District of Columbia, the city of Alexandria, Virginia rests just across the Potomac from the nation's capital. Unlike the surrounding Arlington and Fairfax County areas, Alexandria has kept its compact, urban feel similar, to its neighbor across the Potomac.

In 1791, Alexandria, VA was chartered off and the land assigned to the new, state-less city called the District of Columbia (Washington, DC). However, in 1852, after years of years of mounting resistance, the city was once again returned to Virginia.

Soon after, the Civil War occurred and the nation was divided, placing Alexandria at the edge of the Confederate map. Although no battles were fought within the city limits, the town was under military occupation until the end of the war. Bases like Fort Ward still exist today. The city's famous St. Paul's Episcopal Church, which also still stands, not only suffered through a civil war, but lived through the massive city fire during the War of 1812.

Other notable landmarks include the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, as well as Robert E. Lee's boyhood home. Although Alexandria, VA may have lost the opportunity to be part of the nation's capital, it certainly did not miss out on historical significance.

The historic Old Town of Alexandria is the most commonly visited part of the city. With high-end restaurants and shops along cobbled streets, it is quite similar to the neighborhood of Georgetown in DC. The city's waterfront is also a popular visiting spot.
