The city of Hampton in the U.S. state of Virginia is one of the oldest and most historical cities in the United States of America. Hampton traces its roots all the way back to the early 1600s. Hampton was formed on July 9, 1610 when a group of English settlers seized a village from a local Native American tribe and established a small town centered around an Anglican church, which is now known as St. John's Episcopal Church. The area was named Hampton after the 3rd Earl of Southampton who was an important leader in the Virginia Company of London. The citizens of Hampton believe their city to be the oldest continuously occupied English settlement in the United States.
Hampton is the sixth largest city in the state of Virginia and is an independent city, not falling under the control of any county in Virginia. After its settlement in 1610, Hampton was incorporated as a town in 1849 and as a city on March 30, 1908. The city of Hampton borders the Hampton Roads harbor and Chesapeake Bay at the southeastern end of the Virginia peninsula.
Hampton is home to many important government and historical sites, adding to its rich history and important place in American history. Fort Monroe, home of the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command is located in Hampton as is the Air Force's Langley Air Force Base. NASA calls Langley AFB home for one of its many research centers while the Virginia Air and Space Museum and Hampton University also reside within the city limits. In addition to Hampton's commercial and industrial guests, the city is home to many natural wonders and boasts several miles of waterfront and beaches.
