Rubber roofing is an innovative substitute to the usual or traditional roofing systems such as asphalt and slate. Typically, rubber roofs are made of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EDPM). EDPM is a synthetic rubber that is proven to be durable and flexible. It normally comes in just two colors: white and black.

Types of Rubber Roofing

The rubber roofing system comes in two types: the whole roof or rubber roof shingles.
The whole roof type is described as a whole, seamless sheet of rubber placed on the roof. This type is most suitable for homes that have flat roofs. Leakage is certainly not a problem with this type.
On the other hand, rubber roof shingles can be easily cut and placed on the roof. Just like the traditional roof shingles, rubber roof shingles are layered which provides ease in moving them from groups to the top of the roof.

Advantages of Rubber Roofing

People need not be perturbed with the idea of having a rubber roof; rubber may seem like an inadequate alternative to cement, but rubber roofing systems are tough and long-lasting. In fact, most commercial buildings opt for this roofing system. Rubber roofing has already proven its durability by resisting hail stones and winds of more than 120 KPH. They have even withstood extreme heat and fire. They are simply weatherproof.

Along with their durability, these roofs are also identified as environment-friendly. These roofs are often made from recycled materials. Materials such as tires, which are non-biodegradable, can be reprocessed to make rubber roofs. In addition, they can also function as a shield against ultraviolet radiation.

Another advantage of the rubber-roofing system is that it is low maintenance. Compared to conventional roofing systems, rubber roofs can be repaired without difficulty with the use of spare parts and some adhesive. Though rubber roof is durable, it can also break due to contraction and expansion. In these cases, using spare pieces, and putting on some adhesive will do the trick. Additionally, if there are no spare pieces available, using a special tape on splits and breaks will fix it.

Disadvantages of Rubber Roofing

As mentioned above, EDPM, of which rubber roofs are made of, is only available in two colors. Almost ninety-five percent of the available EDPM is black, and the other five percent is white. People may not find these colors attractive and appealing. On top of that, black may seem monotonous and unexciting.
Another disadvantage is the unpleasant smell when the rubber roofing has been first installed. This may stay on for a few days. Nevertheless, this smell will surely fade.
