Lane County, Oregon is named for General Joseph Lane, a frontiersman who was the Oregon Territory's first Governor. Its 4,620 square miles stretch from the Cascade Mountain Range west to the shores of the Pacific Ocean and is home to the Willamette, McKenzie and Siuslaw Rivers. With almost 90% of the county's mountains, valleys and other lands forested, it is no surprise that the economy is based on timber and agriculture. The county is home to three distinct climates and averages 46 inches of rain annually. While both the Willamette Valley and the coastal areas boast moderately mild temperatures in the summer and winter, the Cascade Mountain Range experiences more extreme temperatures with some areas averaging over 20 inches of snow annually. One could walk the county's beautiful beaches in the morning and snow ski in the mountains the same afternoon.

Eugene, Oregon is the county seat for Lane County, OR and is home to the University of Oregon. Until a county courthouse could be built in Eugene in 1855, the first District Court congregated underneath a large oak tree. The Springfield / Eugene area is the most populated region of the county. Every year people flock to the area to attend the Country Fair which is held outside of nearby Veneta. Eugene also hosts the annual Bach Festival.
