Fulton County, in northern Georgia, is one of five counties that help make up the Atlanta metropolitan area. Fulton County houses the city of Atlanta which has been the state capital since 1868. The county's odd shape and size are due to an unusual history that has shaped the county. Fulton came to be in 1853 when it was carved out of the western half of DeKalb County. Later in 1932, Cobb County ceded the city of Roswell and some lands along Willeo Creek to Fulton County in order to solidify its connection with the portions of Milton County ceded earlier in the year.
The origin of Fulton County's name is a topic that has recently come under scrutiny. The county considers Robert Fulton, whose 1807 steamboat is consider a predecessor to the steam locomotive, its namesake. Some however believe the county is named after Hamilton Fulton. This Fulton was a surveyor for the Western and Atlantic railroad which was crucial in the development of the region.
