Forsyth County is a county located in north central Georgia that is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Because of its proximity to Atlanta, the county has become a popular commuter area for people working in the city. Forsyth County was formed in 1832 after being created from a section of the Cherokee Country territory, and named after John Forsyth. John Forsyth was a former governor of Georgia and a Secretary of state under Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. For much of its history Forsyth County has been a rural area whose primary economic activity was agriculture. The character of the county began to change in the early 1970's with the opening of Georgia State Route 400. After the opening of Georgia 400, people began to move out of Atlanta to the county and utilize Georgia 400 to commute into Atlanta. Forsyth County has continued to expand since the 1970's, and attracts homeowners from neighboring counties looking to escape skyrocketing home prices. Forsyth County has a variety of facilities that cater to outdoor enthusiasts. The most prominent is Lake Lanier, a lake that was created and is maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers. Fishing, water skiing, and boating are all activities that are enjoyed on the lake. The Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department manages 15 parks around the county.
