Fairfax County covers most of the suburban Virginia region surrounding Washington, DC. Made up of mostly land, the county itself is a little over 400 square miles in size. Located adjacent to the nation's capital, this area has seen its fair share of history.

It was in Fairfax, Virginia, on the banks of the Potomac River, that George Washington built his beloved Mount Vernon plantation. In fact, this is also where the country's first president is buried, along with his wife Martha. This landmark still attracts many visitors each year.

During the Civil War, the county covered much of the ground under Union and Confederate battles. Both Chantilly Hill and the second Battle of Bull Run took place in Fairfax, VA. In such close proximity to the capital, these battles proved quite important and the sites remained preserved in their honor.

Today, what used to be mostly rural farmland has become vast suburban sprawl. Areas such as Tysons Corner feature acres of shopping and office buildings. Just as in the past though, Fairfax still plays a role in serving the federal government. The Central Intelligence Agency keeps its headquarters in the town of Langley. Unfortunately for visitors, this site is strictly off limits to non-employees.

The county is home to George Mason University, built in 1972. It is also in Fairfax, Virginia where the famous Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts is located. The park makes up nearly 130 acres and offers all sorts of entertainment throughout the year.

Fairfax County has the typical East Coast climate. The weather allows for warm summer days, but also plenty of white winter snow.
