The area was initially part of the District of Columbia until being returned to Virginia by an act of Congress on July 8, 1846 with the switch taking effect in 1847. From 1847-1920 the county was called Alexandria County until an act of the General Assembly on March 16, 1920 changed the name to Arlington County.
