Luzerne County, Pennsylvania was founded in 1786, shortly after American Independence. It is located in the anthracite-rich Coal Region. Neighboring counties include Wyoming, Lackawanna, Monroe, Carbon, Schuylkill, Columbia, and Sullivan. Wilkes-Barre is the county seat and largest city. Luzerne County is part of the Wyoming Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania.

Prior to the founding of the county, what we now know as Luzerne County, PA was a site of the Yankee-Pennamite War, fought between Pennsylvanian settlers and colonists from Connecticut over conflicting territorial claims. The controversy was not finally settled until 1799, when the Connecticut settlers were allowed to retain their land and gain Pennsylvania citizenship in return for recognizing the right of Pennsylvania to claim the area.

In 1808, Wilkes-Barre leader Jesse Fell first burned anthracite coal on an open-air grate. This marked a major turning point in the history of the United States and Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The power of anthracite coal would go on to fuel the industrial boom that turned the United States into a major economic power over the course of the next century. The region became known as a center of anthracite coal mining.

Luzerne County features four state parks, including Lehigh Gorge, Nescopeck, Ricketts Glen, and Frances Slocum State Parks. The largest of these is Ricketts Glen, which features a renowned hiking trail, the Falls Trail Loop, as well as many beautiful waterfalls.
