Marion County, OR, in the northwestern part of the state, was founded in 1843 as one of the Oregon's original four districts. It has been divided several times since then, and is now only a fraction of the size it once was. At the time of its founding it was called the Champooick District. It was given its current name in 1849 in honor of Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion. Neighboring counties include Clackamas, Wasco, Jefferson, Linn, Polk, and Yamhill counties. The county seat and largest city is Salem, which is also the capital of the state of Oregon. The Willamette Valley is partially located in the county, and the Willamette River and the Cascade Mountains both run through it. Marion County produces more agricultural products than any other county in Oregon.
