The city of Greenville, N.C. consists of approximately 35 square miles. It is located in the center of the eastern half of the state and is the Pitt County seat. It sits on a coastal plain at only 64 to 75 feet above sea level. The climate in the area tends to be mild through all four seasons with an average summer temperature of 84, and winter average of 44.
The city was originally named "Martinsborough" after the Royal Governor, but in 1786 was renamed Greenville to honor Nathaniel Greene, a war hero of the American Revolution.
In the last century, Greenville's only distinctions were that it was home to a small teacher's College and that it was an important tobacco market for the South.
The small teacher's college became East Carolina University in 1967, now one of the largest in the state.
Other notable places in Greenville, North Carolina include Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium; the home of the East Carolina Pirates and Pitt County Memorial Hospital which is one of the largest hospitals in North Carolina. The Voice of America shortwave radio broadcasts from the Greenville Transmitting station which also serves as a backup for the crucial Satellite Interconnect System if needed.
Greenville has also become the shopping destination for the region, as many of the major retailers have stores located there.
