Oneida County, founded in 1798, is located in central New York State. Adjacent counties include Lewis, Herkimer, Otsego, Madison, and Oswego. The county seat is Utica. Important geographical features include the Adirondack Mountains, Oneida Lake, and the Erie Canal. The county is named for the Oneida people, members of the Iroquois Confederation who originally inhabited the land.

Oneida County is the site of Fort Stanwix, where, in 1777, American rebels successfully repelled a British assault as part of a series of victories which helped turn the tide of the Revolutionary War in favor of the young United States. In 1784, the Treaty of Fort Stanwix forced the Iroquois to cede a large amount of their territory to the U.S. The fort still stands today as a monument to America's history and is open for tours. Adirondack Park, the largest state park in the contiguous United States, is also partially located in Oneida County.

Notable natives of Oneida County include Francis Bellamy, the author of the Pledge of Allegiance, who was born in Rome, and Annette Funicello, a major singer and movie star of the mid-twentieth century, who hails from Utica. Hamilton College in Clinton was the alma mater of the great behaviorist psychologist B. F. Skinner.
