Monroe County lies in the western portion of New York State, with Lake Ontario forming its northern border. The county was formed in 1821, named for then U. S. President James Monroe. As the home of Rochester, it is traversed north to south by the Genesee River which flows into Lake Ontario through the town of Charlotte. The Genesee divided the county into two, which made communication and transportation difficult until the two halves were linked by the Erie Canal, completed in 1825. The Underground Railroad, which helped escaped slaves find safe routes to freedom, was active in Monroe County, with Rochester the last stop before fugitives could be delivered into Canada.

Monroe County notables include Susan B. Anthony, Cab Calloway, Frederick Douglass, Henry Lomb and John Jacob Bausch, who founded Bausch and Lomb, and George Eastman, inventor of the modern camera and founder of the Eastman Kodak Company. The Susan B. Anthony House and the George Eastman House are both National Historic Landmarks. Monroe County contains several National Historic Districts and over one hundred individual listings in the National Register of Historic Places, including mills, lighthouses, public buildings, farms, the Erie Canal, bridges, schools and residences.

Genesee Valley Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, is linked to almost every town in the county through its trails and waterways.
