Albany County, one of the original twelve counties of New York, was founded in the early days of the New York colony. It was named in honor of the future King James II, who was also the Duke of Albany. The term "Albany" was originally an alternative name for Scotland. First settled by fur traders, Albany County prospered, and by the time of the American Revolution it was the most populous of the state's counties, though it has since been surpassed by the New York City area. The city of Albany is both the county seat and the capital of New York State. Neighboring counties include Schenectady, Saratoga, Rensselaer, Greene, and Schoharie. The Hudson River flows through Albany County, as does the Mohawk.

Albany County's history is unique in a number of ways. The first Shaker community in the United States was founded in the county by Ann Lee in 1776; the original meeting house still stands. The Van Schaick Mansion, an old colonial estate that was used as a military headquarters in the French and Indian War, the American Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812, is located in Cohoes. It was here that American officers prepared for the Battle of Saratoga, which became a great victory for the American cause and one of the most important turning points in the war. The Watervliet Arsenal north of Albany is another relic from America's military past.
