Sangamon County, IL. was established in 1821 as a merger of Madison County, IL. and Bond County, IL. It's named for the Sangamon River which runs through it. Abraham Lincoln represented the county in the Illinois Legislature and in the US House of Representatives before being elected as President. Government is the largest employer in the county.

Camp Butler National Cemetery is located in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois.
