Located on the Mississippi River and Horseshoe Lake, the county was founded on September 14, 1812 and named for James Madison. The Madison County seat is Edwardsville, which is home to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. The college was established in 1957. While it is home for 13,600 students, it has 80,000 living alumni.
