Located on the Mississippi River and Horseshoe Lake, the county was founded on September 14, 1812 and named for James Madison. The Madison County seat is Edwardsville, which is home to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. The college was established in 1957. While it is home for 13,600 students, it has 80,000 living alumni.

The world's horseradish capital is located in the county. Collinsville, IL produces approximately 85% of the world's horseradish, and the city has an annual festival to commemorate this. Collinsville's other achievement can be found in the world's largest ketchup bottle.
