Cobb County, located in northwest Georgia, is one of the five major counties that make up the Atlanta Metropolitan area. The city of Marietta serves as the county seat for Cobb County and is the largest city within the county. Cobb County was created in December of 1832 by the Georgia General Assembly after the state redistributed land confiscated from the Cherokee Nation. The state came into possession of the land after the federal government passed the Indian Removal Act. The county's name comes from Thomas Willis Cobb who served as a U.S. Representative and Senator from Georgia in the 19th century. The city of Marietta takes its name from Cobb's wife, Mary Moore.

The county school district is the largest single employer in the county with over 15,000 employees. Several private companies either call the county home or have offices in the area. Dobbins Air Reserve Base, operated by the U.S. Air Force Reserve Command is also located in Cobb County and has been in use by the Army Air Force and U.S. Air Force since 1941. The base is currently home to the 22nd Air Force, the Georgia Army National Guard, and Marine and Naval reserve units.
