Chatham County, Georgia is on a coastal plain with marshes. The climate is semi-tropical with almost fifty inches of rain annually. There are forests with live oak, cypress, and palmetto.

James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia in 1733. It was to be a haven for oppressed Protestants and the deserving poor classes of England.

There is the Colonial Park Cemetery that was started in 1750 and closed on 1853. There over nine thousand graves. Some of the early American patriots are buried there.

The parish of St. John the Baptist dates back to the end of the 18th century started by French immigrants from Haiti. It is French Gothic with twin spires. It was almost completely burned down in 1896. It was restored in 1912.
