Middlesex County, Connecticut is one eight counties in the state of Connecticut and is located in the South Central part of the state. Middlesex County, CT, which was founded in 1785, presently has no central government or regulations, but is instead a collection of towns which have their own local governments.
The county has a total area of 439 square miles, of which 70 square miles are water and 369 square miles are land. The county is bordered by Hartford County to the north, New London Count to the east, and New Haven County to the west. To the south of the county is the Long Island Sound, which is a passage of water that eventually provides access to the Atlantic Ocean.
The county's terrain is pretty flat throughout, although it does get a bit hilly as the land approaches the Atlantic Coast. The county is home to Wadsworth Falls and Meshomasic State Forest. Parts of the Silvio O Conte National Wildlife Refuge and Steward B McKinney National Wildlife Refuge are also located in the county, each of which are considered national protected areas.
